Watch the light
Check your planting spot in the morning, at midday, and late in the afternoon. Six hours of sun does not feel the same to a plant when all six arrive during the hottest part of the day.
Look below the surface
Our rainfall can be generous, but not every plant tolerates wet roots. Notice where water lingers after a storm. Match wet sites with suitable plants, and improve drainage before planting azaleas or oakleaf hydrangeas.
Allow room to grow
Use mature width to plan spacing. A small nursery container can become a large tree or shrub. Leave room around roofs, walkways, utilities, and neighboring plants.
Every yard has its own conditions. Start with sunlight, drainage, and mature size before choosing a plant.
