Time it thoughtfully
The cooler months often give woody plants a gentler start. During hot weather, plant only when you can monitor moisture closely.
Water the root ball
Check moisture in the original root ball as well as the surrounding soil. Water thoroughly when needed, rather than relying on brief surface sprinkling. Rainfall does not always wet a dense root ball evenly.
Mulch, with breathing room
Spread a modest layer of mulch across the root area, keeping it away from the trunk and crown. Avoid planting deeper than the original root flare.
Every yard has its own conditions. Start with sunlight, drainage, and mature size before choosing a plant.
