Native is not one growing condition
Bald cypress and oakleaf hydrangea are both native plants, but their tolerance for saturated soil is very different. Match the site first.
Ask about the selection
Species, hybrids, and named cultivars can differ in size, flower form, and wildlife value. Louisiana irises are a good example of a group with both native species and garden hybrids.
Start with one good fit
Add a well-placed native tree or a small group of flowering plants. A useful, manageable planting is a better start than an overcrowded bed.
Every yard has its own conditions. Start with sunlight, drainage, and mature size before choosing a plant.
